Welcome to my small corner of the Internet. Originally this site, this knowledge base, was just hosted for my personal use, but my mentor encouraged me to share it with people on the "Ol' Internet", as he calls it. He said everyone can benefit from what I'm learning as a systems administrator apprentice. So here it is, hopefully it's useful.
This is where I gather all of my growing knowledge on how to disconnect from the public Internet and jack into your own grid. Most of it is how to self-hosting useful tools and some lessons on Linux system administration mixed in. Though the articles and tutorials are written by just me, to begin with, I hope one day others will find it useful and contribute their knowledge too.
This site is organized into four major areas: articles, tutorials, snippets, and posts.
My mentor, he told me not to use his real name, but I could use Zeevkohf (he won’t tell me what it means or where it came from) instead. Anyway, Zeevkohf told me it’s important to have a vision when starting something like this, so before you jump into the articles and tutorials I’ve written, here is my vision–why I’m maintaining this knowledge base.
Basically Digital Homesteading
In the intentional community I call home, my family and I work together with our community to be self sufficient. My mom spends a lot of time working on what is basically a large community homestead. We raise our own animals and food with the goal to be able to live off the grid. I’ve been told that usually means being disconnected from the power grid or from the stores used to support everyone else in America. Well as a lover of sci-fi stories, I took “off the grid” to mean disconnected from the Internet and the Corporate Overlords that run it. While others grow food and harvest electricity in my community, it’s my goal to help by showing people how to disconnected from the corporatization (that a real word right?) of the Internet.
Zeevkohf has told me stories, before he joined us, about how the Internet looked when it started, a bunch of nerds doing fun and cool things, and then it all went down hill when the corporate world took over. Everything became about profits and not about users. That sounds terrible. So my vision is to “fight for the users” (such a good movie) and help others step away from the Corporate Overlords who just want your money, your data, your attention and instead help the users create their own personal grid that allows for the use of modern conveniences, but not bound to those companies who don’t care about you in the slightest. Kind of like a digital form of homesteading, with a whole lot less weeding. 😉
I want to be part of the conversation on how, we the users, can take back the exploration and discover the Internet originally introduced people to, and help my community, and anyone else that finds this site, become a decentralized force that the Corporate Overloads can’t control and profit from every again. Let’s all disconnect from the corporate grid and into our personal grids, and starve the Overloads of what is rightfully ours.
